How to Effectively Remove Rust from Your Outdoor Ninja Rig: A Step-by-Step Guide

Rust can be a major challenge for ninja warrior athletes who have outdoor ninja courses. Over time, exposure to rain, humidity, and other elements can cause rust to develop on your rig. This not only diminishes its appearance but can also weaken its structure. Fortunately, with the right approach, you can remove rust effectively and restore your rig. This guide provides clear and practical steps to clean, treat, and repaint your outdoor ninja rig. There's a very simple short-term fix, and a multi-step professional fix.

The short-term fix

Sand the rust away, wipe clean, then use a quality paint and primer such as Rustoleum 2x spray paint.

The Professional Fix

1. Clean the Area with Alcohol

Start your rust removal process by ensuring the area is clean. Use isopropyl alcohol to wipe down the rusted surfaces. This step removes wax, dirt, and oils that have built up over time. A clean surface is key to ensuring that the treatments stick well, which is crucial for effective rust removal.

2. Sand Down to the Metal

Next, address the rust directly. Use a power sander or angle grinder with a metal brush bit to sand the rusted area and the surrounding portion. Local paint professionals recommend using steel wool to get rid of the rust and other debris, scrubbing first with a coarse pad and then with a medium-fine pad. Safety is important here; wear safety goggles and a dust mask to protect yourself from flying debris.

3. Blow Away Dust and Wipe Again

After sanding, dust and debris will cover your surface. Use an air compressor or a blower to clear the area. It’s also a good idea to wipe down the surface with alcohol again to ensure no particles remain, as these could interfere with the next treatment steps.

4. Coat with a Rust Reformer

Now it’s time to apply a rust reformer. This product helps convert rust into a stable compound and prevents future rusting. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the application process. Allow the reformer to dry completely, which may take about 30 minutes, before proceeding.

5. Apply an Undercoating

To enhance protection against moisture and rust, apply a rubberized undercoating. This layer serves as a barrier, shielding exposed metal surfaces from the elements. Make sure to cover all metal areas thoroughly; this can significantly extend the life of your rig. A quality undercoating can protect against rust for several years if applied correctly.

6. Apply Three Coats of Primer

With the undercoating dry, you can move on to applying primer. Use a high-quality primer meant for metal surfaces. Applying three coats is recommended and be sure to allow each coat to dry for at least an hour before adding the next. This step is crucial for ensuring that the paint adheres well, offering a long-lasting finish.

7. Paint

Finally, it’s time to add the finishing touch to your Ninja rig. Choose a spray paint designed specifically for metal surfaces. Feel free to choose colors that match your style or blend with your backyard decor. Applying multiple thin coats will yield better results. Aim for at least three coats, with a drying time of an hour or more between each. Use your remaining spray paint for maintaining touch ups as needed throughout the year.
